Book Presentation: Fluid Landscape: Space, Identity and European Borderlands

On Wednesday, 8 May 2024, the Study Centre for National Reconciliation hosted a presentation of the scientific monograph entitled Fluid Landscape: Space, Identity and European Borderlands. The book was presented by its editor, Dr Matic Batič, and the author of one paper, Dr Damjan Hančič. The talk was led by Dr Pavlina Bobič.

The bilingual (Slovenian–English) scientific monograph Fluidna krajina/Fluid Landscape discusses Central European borderlands in the first half of the 20th century, focusing on the characteristics and importance of spatial policy in these regions. The research approach of the papers’ authors is based on analysing the backgrounds, forms and functions of ideologically marked processes of appropriating space. Establishing and legitimising authority did not take place only through international agreements, the operation of administrative and repressive apparatuses etc., but also through symbolic strategies of expressing power and seeking legitimacy. The papers’ authors analyse various aspects of such spatial policies, particularly the processes of changing place names, erecting monuments and other representative public buildings.

In geographic terms, the papers in the monograph focus on three cases of Central European border areas, namely the North Adriatic region, South Tyrol and Trentino and the space in the north and northeast of the present-day Republic of Slovenia. It is characteristic of all these areas that in the first half of the 20th century, they were not only bones of contention between different countries; their “borderness” also arose from the internal situations, especially the presence of different national communities, which tried to actively enforce their political demands. By analysing conceptually marked spatial interventions, the papers provide a fresh perspective on the history of European borderlands.
