Lecture on the Occasion of the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust

On the occasion of the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, the Park of Military History, in collaboration with the Study Centre for National Reconciliation, prepared a lecture entitled “Odilo Globočnik, a Nazi Criminal – His Links to Pivka”.

Odilo Globočnik, a Nazi Criminal

Renato Podbersič, PhD, a research fellow at the Study Centre for National Reconciliation, presented the life of Odilo Lothar Ludovicus Globočnik (1904–1945), who, in the view of many Holocaust historians, was one of the most unconscionable criminals of the Second World War. Globočnik was born in Trieste but grew up in Austrian Carinthia. His enthusiasm and near-fanatical loyalty to the Nazi vision secured his quick advancement within NSDAP. In 1942, Nazis under Globočnik’s command killed around two million Jews in Poland. In September 1943, Globočnik was posted to Trieste as the Highest SS and Police Leader of the Operational Zone of the Adriatic Littoral. Dr Podbersič also touched upon a less-known segment of Globočnik’s life tied to Slovene lands, where his father hailed from. In this context, he specifically highlighted Globočnik’s links to Pivka and the surrounding area as his parents married in the parish church of Slavina, and his father lived and worked in Šent Peter na Krasu, now Pivka, before the marriage.
